Tromels castle mound

Ancient stories tell that in the 14th century in Melnsils on the very shore of the sea, lived the only real Latvian pirate Trommels, who owned Tromel castle, which was located on a high dune on the left bank of the Baķupīte river. While the ships near Melnsils were waiting for the right wind, to get around the nearby located cape Kolka, Trommel robbed the ships and stored the stolen treasures in the castle cellars. The place and walls of the castle were still visible at the end of the 19th and the 20th century when the locals used stones and bricks from the castle to build their own houses. Tromels castle is no longer visible today, but a medieval fortification site that is an archaeological monument of national significance and pits dug by hidden treasure hunters in the dune can still be seen today. The castle is in Roja parish, 400 m northeast of Melnsila village shop, 100 m from Krauju house.

Driving along the Riga–Kolka highway, the steep can be found at the very border of the Slītere National Park. The steep top opens a panorama of the sea while, weather conditions permitting, the steep itself can be seen from as far as the cape of Kolka.

White Dune

Pūrciems White Dune is approximately 20 metres high. The dune is 6,000 years old, it was created by nature even before the Baltic Sea, when there was the Littorina Sea, and is much, much older than the current dunes along the Baltic Sea coast. The area around the dune tells about primeval nature and the history of the dune, because this is where the first Stone Age settlement at the north western coast of Latvia was discovered. For visitors to fully enjoy this archaeological monument of national importance, a special path has been built along the banks of River Pilsupīte. A walk along the path will inform a visitor about how the sand headland was created and how it was changed by nature and man. The path is 900 metres long, while the approximate time it takes to walk the path is up to one hour.

Natural Monument “Kaltenes Kalvas”

There is a large pile-up of stones in a forest approximately one-and-a-half-kilometres from Kaltene Beach, which the locals call Kalvas. This is a unique phenomenon, the only of its kind on Latvia’s beaches. The huge mossy stones were created thousands of years ago as the Baltic Ice Lake was receding. There are special paths for visitors to observe the stones. Visitors are offered two routes: the shortest one is less than a kilometre long, while the other is one-and-and-a-half kilometres long. A good choice for a peaceful walk in an unusual place offering views of truly primeval landscapes.

In 1434, the bishop of Kurzeme bought the Dundaga Estate, and from the 16th to the 20th century, it was owned by the noble Maidel and Osten-Zacken dynasties. The Dundaga Castle has burned down twice and been rebuilt many times, most recently after the fire that was set during the 1905 Revolution.
